Perth primary school pupils went ‘home’ early as part of an innovative class project on Tuesday 24 January 2012.
The primary 6/7 class from Goodlyburn Primary School visited a showhome and other homes under construction at Perth house-builders Stephen’s Balgarvie development in Scone.
The visit is part of the class’s ‘Financial Education’ topic which will focus on the opening of a new showhome.
Back in the classroom and now armed with various marketing materials and prices lists, the pupils, aged 10 and 11, will now be given a budget to design a room,
produce brochures and adverts, and promote the grand opening. A winning team will be selected next month.
The project will highlight careers in the property and building trade and explore new skills such as designing, scale drawing, measuring and purchasing as well as learning about renewable energies, working within a budget, advertising and finance in general.
Gail McLaren, Class Teacher said, “We were delighted that Stephen welcomed us to their showhome which added a ‘real life’ element to this activity. Seeing an actual showhome rather than just reading about one in a brochure added another dimension to their learning experience and helped them understand layout, dimensions and design, as well as exploring the various marketing materials which Stephen use to attract potential buyers. The project ties in nicely with the Curriculum for Excellence which requires pupils to be taught skills for the workplace and a greater understanding of the opportunities available to them.”
Meanwhile, Tom Buchanan, Marketing Manager, Stephen commented, “As a local firm, we were delighted to be approached by a Perth primary school and have been extremely impressed by the pupils’ interest and enthusiasm. I will look forward to returning to Goodlyburn in the future to help judge the teams’ efforts and select the winner. Who knows, we might even recruit one of these pupils in the years to come!”
The Balgarvie development has proved to be a winner with buyers over recent years due to the consistently high quality finish of its homes, together with its prime location. The site comprises a mixed housing development, ranging from two-bedroom bungalows to five-bedroom family houses. The collection of 250 homes is now within Phase 6, with A&J Stephen commencing works on site in 2001.
