Hat-Trick as Perth site manager beats 13,000 in national housebuidling awards

A Site Manager at Perth-based housebuilders A&J Stephen Limited has been voted one of the best in Scotland at the regional final of the industry's most prestigious awards scheme.

Alan Robertson (48) was recognised for his exemplary commitment to building new houses of outstanding quality when he won the Regional award in the Small Builder category for A&J Stephen’s Balgarvie site in Scone, Perthshire. He also won a Site Manager award and his first Seal of Excellence.

The regional winners of the Pride in the Job Awards, run by NHBC (National House-Building Council), beat a shortlist of exceptionally skilled site managers.  Alan's success was recognised on Friday 7 October 2011 at a ceremony held at the Hilton in Glasgow. Chosen from over 13,000 site managers nationwide working on projects registered with NHBC, the UK's leading new-home warranty and insurance provider, they will now represent Scotland at the competition's grand final in London in January, hoping to secure their place as the nation's best housebuilder.

Pride in the Job is the only awards scheme to reward site managers for the unique contribution they make to the housebuilding process, being responsible for delivering high quality homes by directing projects from start to finish.

Congratulating Alan, John Stephen, Managing Director of A&J Stephen said, 'On behalf of the company, I would like to congratulate and thank Alan for his ongoing outstanding commitment to his work and to the Stephen product. As a family firm with over 75 years' expertise in high-quality house-building, we have built a reputation as house-builders to trust which is due, in part, to our professional and loyal team, and their dedication to providing not only an outstanding product, but first-class customer care.'

Meanwhile, Malcolm MacLeod, NHBC Director for Scotland, said, 'Pride in the Job has been instrumental in raising the build quality of new homes in the UK for over three decades, with housebuilders now routinely striving for perfection in their work. A Pride in the Job award at any level marks the recipient out as a top performer, showing their true diligence and commitment to producing the best quality homes possible, but to win a Regional title demonstrates something just that little bit special.'

Pride in the Job was the brain-child of an Edinburgh-man, NHBC's former Chairman and Director General, Andrew Tait OBE, who died in March this year aged 88; it was a historic initiative to raise housebuilding standards to protect homeowners. Now in its 31st year, the creation of Pride in the Job by Tait is a key landmark in NHBC's 75 year history.

The Balgarvie development has proved to be a winner with buyers over recent years due to the consistently high quality finish of its homes, together with its prime location. The site comprises a mixed housing development, ranging from two-bedroom bungalows to five-bedroom family houses. The homes are constructed with a traditional wooden frame and finished in a combination of rendering, brick and stone-work. The collection of 250 homes is now within Phase 6, with A&J Stephen commencing works on site in 2001.
