Local housebuilders support 'grass roots' golf coaching in Scone

Perth-based housebuilders A&J Stephen have teed up an exciting sponsorship deal with a local golf Professional, aimed at encouraging more youngsters to take up the game.

The company is working with Gregor Wright to support his initiative to drive the growth and development of junior golf in Scone and the surrounding area.

Gregor, who is a Teaching Professional at Murrayshall Country House Hotel and Golf Club, has recently established the Murrayshall Junior Golf Academy, which has a primary focus on grass roots junior coaching and development. Gregor has used the financial support provided by A & J Stephen to purchase a range of schools' golf equipment, including clubs and putters, enabling him to take his coaching directly into the local community and schools.

Last week, Gregor held taster sessions within Robert Douglas Memorial School in Scone, where around 250 pupils from primaries one to six enjoyed some introductory golf activities, many for the first time. Similar sessions will be held in August, before the Solheim Cup which takes place at Gleneagles in September. It is hoped that representatives from the Solheim Cup will also visit the school as part of Perth and Kinross Council's drive to 'Try Golf after School'.

Teacher Mrs Mitchell commented, "My class loved their golf taster session and had lots of fun."

The equipment was supplied by 'GolPhin', a Scottish company focused on making golf fun for young children. The equipment is specifically designed for primary school age children to provide an enjoyable, fun filled and confidence building learning experience when being introduced to golf.

A & J Stephen, who are shortly looking to commence construction on their latest Scone development at Mansfield Park, have a long association with the village.

John Stephen, Managing Director commented, "We are delighted to be assisting Gregor, who is also a Stephen home owner, with this golf programme which we are sure will encourage many youngsters to give the game of golf a try. Gregor’s enthusiasm is infectious and I am sure, with further support from the team at Murrayshall, who are fully behind this community-based initiative, this junior coaching will be a great success."

Gregor added "Being able to use new state-of-the art equipment will help me introduce children of all ages to the game of golf, provide the opportunity of progression into the Murrayshall Junior Golf Academy and hopefully a life-long love of golf. Feedback from the first RDM sessions was extremely positive so we’re off to a great start!"
